via Florida Tech Sports

Florida Tech Baseball will open the 2012 season by honoring one of its own in former Panther and current Major League Baseball player Tim Wakefield Saturday, February 11th at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.

Prior to the 12 p.m. doubleheader against Claflin University, Wakefield will be recognized for earning his 200th Major League Baseball victory. Following the ceremony, the Melbourne native will throw out the season’s first pitch.

Wakefield played for the Panthers from 1986-88. During his sophomore and junior seasons, he was named team MVP as a first baseman. He still owns school records for career home runs (40) and single-season home runs (22) and RBIs (71).

Greg Berkemeier returns for his fifth season as FIT’s head baseball coach. He will once again be flanked by assistants Matt Mercurio and former big leaguer Lee Stange. In each of Berkemeier’s first four years, the Panthers have won 30-plus games. Returning from the 2011 team are Preseason All-Americans K.C. Clabough and Ryan McChesney. Between the two, they slugged 142 hits, including 36 doubles, five triples and seven home runs. They also combined for 83 RBIs.

After Saturday’s doubleheader, the Panthers will conclude the weekend by hosting Claflin in a single-game Sunday at 12 p.m.

Live audio and stats will be available for the three-game series at FloridaTechSports.com/live.

The ticket prices for the Panthers’ regular-season home baseball games are $7 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens (60 and above) and non-Florida Tech students with school ID. FIT students, faculty and staff along with one guest, military in uniform and children five and under are free. FIT students, faculty and staff must show school ID to receive free admission. For all home regular-season baseball doubleheaders, one ticket grants admission into both games.
